Let’s Upgrade your Mini Sumo to 1kg Sumo Robot

Let’s Upgrade your Mini Sumo to 1kg Sumo Robot

Introduction

This tutorial is specially designed for robotics enthusiasts that are excited about 1kg Sumo Robot. Let’s start on this journey!

To upgrade your Mini Sumo to 1kg specification, we need to have a new chassis and additional weight to make sure it can compete in competition. Rule for 1kg Sumo Robot is as follows

Weight : Below 1kg
Dimension : Size is not exceed 15cm x 15cm (Length x Width)

3D Model for this upgrade can be download from link below

Component List

We will take a component from existing kit of Ikedo Mini Sumo Robot Pro Kit with additional item and change of 3D Printing part. To undergo this upgrading, you might should have a 3D Printer that can print 3D Part for this sumo robot. We could suggest to take a look some 3D Printer that we can provide for you such as

Creality Ender-3 V3 SE

Artillery Sidewinder X3 Pro

Artillery Sidewinder X3 Plus

Let's review all the component that we should have

1. 1x Maker Mini Sumo Controller

Maker Mini Sumo Controller is the ultimate board for you, no matter you are a beginner or expert in this Sumo Robot world. It have been designing to make it as beginner-friendly as possible, and at the same time enable it to fullfill the stringent requirements. This board will be our brain in our sumo robot.

Arduino Nano/Uno Compatible (Powered by ATMEGA328P).
Vin: 7V - 18V
Motor: 3A continuous, 6A peak

2. 5x Maker Object Sensor (Opponent Sensor)

Maker Object is a tiny digital infrared (IR) proximity sensor designed for object/obstacle detection. With this feature, Maker Object is well fitted in application such as sumo robot. We use 5 unit of this sensor to cover all the area including front, left and right.

Adjustable Sensing Range:

15cm - 60cm (Black Surface)

40cm - 140cm (White Surface)

3. 2x Maker Reflectance Sensor (Edge)

Maker Reflect is a tiny reflectance sensor that consists of an infrared (IR) to measures how much light is reflected back. This tiny sensor can be easily fitted in the tightest space available on your robot. We use 2 unit of this sensor to cover left and right edge of the game field.

Sensing Distance (Height): 1mm to 40mm (Vcc = 5V, Black line on a white surface)
Output: Analog Voltage (White surface = lower voltage)

4. 2x 800RPM 6V DC Micro Metal Gearmotor

NovaMax DC Motors are more powerful than the standard DC motors. İt has a high production quality, high torque, and high acceleration. These micro gear motors are used successfully in many industries due to their lightweight and small size.

Operating Voltage: 6 to 16VDC
Normal Operating Voltage: 6VDC
Maximum. Operating Voltage: 16VDC
Speed: 800Rpm (RPM) at 6VDC
No Stall Current: 190mA
Operating Current: 260mA
Stopping Current: 5.75A
Rated Load Torque: 3.1kg/cm
Stall Torque: 4.5kg/cm

*To using this motor in Sumo Robot, we highly recommend to use 2S Battery (7.4V) only

*For Ikedo Mini Sumo Robot Starter Kit, and Ikedo Mini Sumo Robot V2, you have an option to upgrade your DC Micro Metal Gearmotor (SPG10) to Novamax DC Motor to boost your speed and torque power.

5. 2x Sumozade Silicone Wheel 30x23mm

Next we will talk about our best silicone wheels ever. It is very useful for Mini Sumo Robot, Line follower Robot and all kind of robot Project. Remarkable point of Wheel is High Grip and High Traction on Sumo Dohyo. This Wheel tread is composed of Shore A10 that allows you to reach the Highest Traction.

Wheel Diameter: 30mm
Wheel Width: 23mm
Center Hole: 3mm
Wheel Shore: 10A

6. 1x 7.4V 450mAh LiPo Battery

This 7.4V LiPo rechargeable battery is almost the size of an AA size battery. It is very compact and handy with low capacity (450mAH).

Rated Voltage: 7.4V
Fully-charge Voltage: 8.4V
Capacity: 450mAh
Discharge: 20C

User is recommend to purchase its charger Multi-Function LIPO Balance Charger to ensure it is charged in a proper way and make sure battery is always in good condition to action.

*Another option for the power supply is using LIPO Battery 7.4V 900mAH for more capacity and larger in size.

7. 1x Copper Base Weight Base

Copper Base is use to add more weight into the sumo robot. More weight is useful to make the robot not easy to push out by the enemy. This plate consume additional around 100g to the sumo robot.

*For Ikedo Mini Sumo Robot Starter Kit, and Ikedo Mini Sumo Robot V2, you have an option to add any copper plate or any weight balancing to the robot according to size of body base that we provide

*Get the size of Copper Plate from this STEP FILE

8. 1x JST LiPo Battery Wire Extension

This connectors is specially design for 7.4V Li-Po battery usually comes with JST connector. It could be very hard for you to connect to your board directly because the battery is made for the RC applications.

Length: ~ 15 cm
Terminated with stripped wires
Compatible with:
Lipo Battery 7.4V 900mAh
Lipo Battery 7.4V 450mAh

9. 1x GVS Female to Female Extension

This connector is female to female extension wire to connect from Reflect Sensor to Maker Sumo Controller board. It's already long enough to connect from bottom side of sumo robot to controller board at top. Another option beside this connector is using 40-Way 20cm Dupont Jumper Wire.

*Initially, from Pro Kit, we only have 1 GVS connector to use with Reflect Sensor, but for this upgrading, you need another jumper wire to connect Left and Right Maker Object Sensor to Maker Sumo Controller Board.

10. 12x M3x6 Self Tapping Screw (Black)

This tapping screw is use for Reflect Sensor, Maker Sumo Controller, Copper Plate, Roof and Holder Strap.
*need to add another 4pcs tapping screw for additional parts such as roof and battery cover.

11. 4x M3x18 Bolt for Motor Bracket & M3 Nut for Motor Bracket

We use 4 unit of M3 Bolt to connect motor bracket to the body base. The usage of this bolt is same as Ikedo Mini Sumo Robot Pro Kit before.

12. 24x Weight Balancing

We need to use 24pcs of weight balancing to fill up the bottom part of the Sumo Robot.

Size: 19mm x 11.5mm x 4 mm.

Weight: 5g/pcs

13. 3D Printing Part:

We can download the 3D file for 1kg Sumo Robot from list below
